Real Madrid beat Barcelona 2-0 in the “El Clasico” at the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday to end its seven-match winless streak against its rival and return to the top of the Spanish league.
Brazil’s Vinicius Junior opened scoring in the 71st minute and substitute Mariano Diaz sealed Madrid’s in stoppage time to give Madrid a one-point lead over Barcelona in the La Liga table.
Mariano had not played a single minute in La Liga for Zinedine Zidane’s side this season until being brought off the bench in injury time.
Zinedine Zidane’s Madrid was winless in three straight games in all competitions, and also hadn’t won at home in three consecutive games.
Madrid had lost its last four league games at the Bernabeu against Barcelona, and its last win over the rival in any competition had come back in 2017 in the Spanish Super Cup.
At the end of the match Real Madrid’s coach, Zinedane Zidane said:
“We deserve our victory for everything we did, in attack and defence. It has been a complicated week for us and we had the chance to turn things around, and we did that.
“But this win also doesn’t change anything. We have a long way to go and we have to continue. We’ve got three important points but we’ll have more difficult games and we will be criticised again.”
