The Nigerian Supreme Court has declared erstwhile governor of Kebbi State and serving senator, Adamu Aliero as the validly elected candidate to fly the flag of the People’s Democratic Party in the contest for Kebbi Central Senatorial District in this year’s general elections.
In its lead judgement, the court set aside the judgement of the Court of Appeal which had declared Mr Saidu Haruna as the winner of the Kebbi Central primaries. The lower court had earlier nullified the declaration of Aliero as the winner of the primaries. Dissatisfied with the annulment of his victory, the incumbent senator representing the district decided to challenge the ruling at the apex court.
Five judges of the Supreme Court ruled on the appeal. However, one of the justices namely Emmanuel Agbim disagreed with the decision. The lead judgement was prepared by Justice Centus Nweze while the reading was done by Justice Amina Augie.
