In a momentous session at the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, the esteemed member representing the Agege 1 constituency, has been reelected as Speaker for an unprecedented third term. This landmark decision was reached following the proclamation of the 10th Assembly by the distinguished Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, earlier today.
The proceedings began with a sense of anticipation as Governor Sanwo-Olu, accompanied by Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat and other high-ranking government officials, entered the chamber to proclaim the Assembly. Shortly thereafter, Obasa, the longest-serving member of the House, was nominated by Temitope Adewale, who represents Ifako-Ijaiye 1 state constituency, and promptly emerged as the Speaker of the 10th Assembly.
The nomination by Adewale was met with unanimous support from the lawmakers, further solidifying Obasa’s position as a respected leader within the Assembly. The nomination was seconded by Sylvester Ogunkelu, a fellow legislator known for his astute contributions to the House’s deliberations.
Additionally, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda was elected as the Deputy Speaker, a crucial role that carries significant responsibilities in the legislative process.
Following the reconfirmation of Obasa’s leadership, the Assembly proceeded to elect key positions vital to its smooth functioning. Noheem Adams, previously the Deputy Majority Leader in the ninth Assembly, was elected as the new Majority Leader, showcasing the trust placed in his abilities. Hon. Adedamola Kasunmu was elected as the Deputy Majority Leader, reinforcing the diverse talent pool present within the Assembly.
Other notable appointments include the election of Mojeed Fatai, representing Ibeju Lekki 1, as the Chief Whip, a role that involves maintaining party discipline and ensuring the efficient management of legislative activities. Hon. David Setonji was elected as the Deputy Chief Whip, a position that works in tandem with the Chief Whip to fulfill the Assembly’s objectives.
