In a landmark judgment delivered on Friday evening, the Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja upheld the election of Nasir Idris as the Governor of Kebbi State. The court’s decision effectively dismissed the appeal filed by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and its governorship candidate, Aminu Bande.
Justice Ndukwe Anyannwu, who delivered the unanimous judgment, stated that the PDP’s petition failed to present sufficient evidence to substantiate their claims. The court further held that the allegations against the Deputy Governor, Abubakar Umar Tafida, regarding forged testimonials were unsubstantiated.
The PDP’s appeal also centered on non-compliance with the Electoral Act during the election process. However, the court found no merit in these claims, stating that the appellants failed to demonstrate how these alleged irregularities had a significant impact on the election outcome.
With this ruling, the Court of Appeal has affirmed the earlier decision of the Kebbi State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal, which had also dismissed the PDP’s petition and upheld Governor Nasir Idris’s election victory.
