In a shocking turn of events, 27 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) earlier today.

According to inside sources, the unanimous decision materialized during this morning’s closed door sitting.

This latest move adds fresh fuel to the already raging power struggle between Amaewhule and Edison Ehie over the coveted Speakership. Amaewhule is widely categorized as loyal to former governor Nyesom Wike, whilst Ehie falls in the camp of current governor Siminalayi Fubara.

Last October, under a united Amaewhule faction, the Assembly served impeachment charges on Gov. Fubara – further removing Ehie as Majority Leader in a surprise upset. In swift retaliation, Fubara’s loyal legislators immediately impeached Amaewhule, installing Ehie as the new Speaker.

The 32-seat Assembly’s crisis originally stemmed from escalating tensions between Fubara and Minister Wike. Despite recent public appearances dampening worries, Monday’s shocking defections signal Rivers’ political theater may be plunging into further uncertainty.
