In a notable political development, the Senator representing Kano South, Kawu Samaila, on Wednesday formally announced his defection from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The announcement was made public on the floor of the Senate, where Senate President Godswill Akpabio read Senator Kawu’s official letter of defection during plenary.
Following the reading of the letter, APC Senators welcomed Kawu enthusiastically. Members of the party rose en masse, shaking hands and embracing their new colleague in a show of solidarity and celebration.
The welcoming lawmakers then led Senator Kawu to his new seat on the side of the chamber occupied by the majority party, marking his full integration into the APC caucus.
Kawu’s defection adds to the growing ranks of the APC in the upper legislative chamber and could signal shifting political alliances ahead of the next electoral cycle.
