Former President Muhammadu Buhari has passed away. His death was confirmed on Thursday afternoon by his former aide, Bashir Ahmad, in a post shared on X (formerly Twitter).

Ahmad wrote:
“The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus. Amin.”

Buhari, aged 82, served as Nigeria’s democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023, following an earlier tenure as the country’s military head of state from 1983 to 1985. He was widely known for his anti-corruption agenda, his emphasis on public sector reforms, and his efforts to revitalise Nigeria’s infrastructure and economic framework during his two terms in office.

A retired major general in the Nigerian Army, Buhari remained an influential figure in Nigerian politics and public discourse until his death.
