The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a heat stress warning as temperatures rise across several parts of Nigeria.
In a public advisory, the agency said the current weather conditions could trigger heat stress in states including Benue State, Nasarawa State, Federal Capital Territory, Kogi State, Niger State, Kebbi State, Cross River State, Oyo State and Ogun State, as well as other inland areas of the southern states.
NiMet urged the public to take precautionary measures to avoid heat-related illnesses.
The agency advised residents to drink plenty of water, remain in well-ventilated or air-conditioned spaces where possible, and wear hats, sunshades and sunscreen when outdoors. It also recommended wearing light, breathable clothing and limiting strenuous outdoor activities, particularly between 12:00 pm and 4:00 pm when temperatures are usually highest.
Parents and caregivers were also warned to keep infants cool and properly hydrated and never leave children in parked vehicles.
NiMet noted that heat stress can occur due to a combination of factors including high temperatures, humidity, poor ventilation, dehydration, clothing and physical exertion.
The agency urged Nigerians to stay updated with official weather advisories and follow safety guidelines to reduce health risks during the hot conditions.
