The U.S. Mission Nigeria has issued a security alert warning of possible protests in Abuja amid rising tensions linked to the ongoing conflict with Iran.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the U.S. Embassy in Abuja informed American citizens that there is a high potential for demonstrations today, March 4, 2026. The embassy noted that previous protests by some groups had resulted in violent clashes with Nigerian security forces.

The mission advised U.S. citizens in the Federal Capital Territory to remain in their residences and avoid areas where protests may occur.

“The Embassy strongly recommends that all U.S. citizens in Abuja remain in their residences,” the statement said.

It further urged citizens to avoid crowds, monitor local media for updates, maintain a low profile, and remain vigilant in public places such as shopping centres, cinemas and places of worship.

Other safety measures outlined include keeping mobile phones charged, carrying proper identification, reviewing personal security plans, and varying travel routes and times to reduce predictability.

The embassy also advised Americans to familiarise themselves with emergency exits when entering buildings and to remain cautious if caught unexpectedly near large gatherings.

Despite the security concerns, the mission said the consular sections of the embassy in Abuja and the U.S. Consulate General Lagos remain open for services.

The U.S. mission encouraged its citizens to enrol in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program to receive timely security updates and emergency information.
