The number of confirmed Ebola cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has surpassed 8,000, with 3,901 deaths recorded in the country’s latest government data.

The outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo strain, is reportedly the largest and deadliest Ebola epidemic in the DRC’s history.

There are currently no approved vaccines or treatments specifically for the Bundibugyo strain. However, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said trials of three potential vaccines could begin by October or November.

The DRC, with support from the WHO and Doctors Without Borders, has also launched a test vaccination programme to assess whether vaccines developed for other Ebola strains could provide protection.

International partners have increased support for the response, with the European Union announcing €7.5 million in additional aid to strengthen the Ebola response, preparedness and health surveillance.

The United States also announced an additional $267 million to support efforts to contain the outbreak.
