The Vice-Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Rabiu Kwankwaso, has said an NDC government led by Peter Obi would reintroduce fuel subsidy through a different approach.

Kwankwaso stated this in an interview with Arise News, saying the party would seek to reduce petrol prices through increased investment in domestic refining.

He said the government could establish additional refineries to boost local production and ensure Nigerians have access to petrol at a “reasonable price.”

Kwankwaso also criticised President Bola Tinubu’s decision to remove the petrol subsidy immediately after assuming office in 2023, arguing that the policy was implemented without adequately addressing its potential consequences.

Tinubu announced the removal of the subsidy in his inaugural address on May 29, 2023.
