Kenya has recorded its first Ebola death after a Kenyan man who had been living in the Democratic Republic of Congo died shortly after returning to the country.

Health Minister Aden Duale said the man, who had been receiving treatment in the DRC, travelled overland to Kampala, Uganda, before flying to Nairobi on October 3. He was screened and tested positive for Ebola before dying on Monday night.

Duale said 28 contacts, including family members and healthcare workers, had been identified, with one testing positive so far.

He urged Kenyans not to panic, saying the government had activated measures to contain the disease.

The DRC declared its 17th Ebola outbreak in May. According to the World Health Organisation, 4,082 deaths had been recorded from 8,463 cases of the Bundibugyo strain as of October 2. There is currently no approved vaccine or specific treatment for the strain.
