A clash between herders and farmers in Gora village in Safana Local Government Area of Katsina State on Tuesday night has left many people dead.

Briefing newsmen in Katsina, the State Police Command spokesman, Isah Gambo said the clashes erupted when a farmer was killed by a herder for protesting the incursion of cows into his farm.

“The violent clash took place when a herdsman pushed his cows into the farm whose owner was harvesting his beans. In retaliation, some villagers lynched and killed the herdsman,” Gambo said.

Reports said when the relatives of the herder got the information that their brother had been killed, they mobilized themselves and trooped to Gora where they started shooting at any farmer in sight. No fewer than 12 persons were feared dead and nine injured during the clashes that ensued.

 Gambo said a contingent of mobile police officers had been sent to the area to bring the violence under control, adding that another team of joint security comprising of soldiers, police from anti-robbery squad and operatives from the State Security Service had also been deployed to the area.

Violence between Fulani herdsmen and farming communities in have left thousands of people dead in several Nigerian states including Benue, Taraba, Nasarawa, Kaduna and Plateau.
