Multiple reports from the Republic of Sudan say ousted President Omar al-Bashir has been transferred from a holding facility into a maximum security prison.
Reuters reports that Al-Bashir is being held at the Kobar Maximum Security Prison located in the country’s capital, Khartoum. They added that he is being held in solitary confinement under tight security.
Bashir was forced out of power about a week ago by the military on the back of massive protests. Days after his ouster, the Transitional Military Council (TMC) confirmed his arrest.
Meanwhile, the Ugandan government has indicated that it is willing to offer asylum to Al-Bashir for the critical role he played in securing the latest South Sudan peace deal.
“If Omar al-Bashir applies for asylum in Uganda, that is a matter that can be considered by the President of Uganda,” Okello Oryem, Uganda’s Foreign Affairs Minister told reporters.
“President Omar Al-Bashir was co-guarantor for the peace agreement of South Sudan. He has played a very critical role for which we are very grateful and his asylum in Uganda is something we can consider,” he added.
Oryem also called upon Sudan’s military to respect the wishes of the people, adding that the Ugandan government would be closely watching developments in Khartoum for a peaceful transition of power.
Sudan’s military council, which is managing the transition had on Monday said that the decision to extradite Bashir and other ICC suspects would be taken by a popularly elected civilian government.
