Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan on Sunday, July 24, produced two incredible 100m hurdles runs on the final day of the 2022 world athletics championships in Oregon, USA. The 25-year-old Nigerian set a new World record and won the global title.
In the women’s 100m hurdles semifinal, Amusan crushed the World record, clocking 12.12 seconds (w+0.9 seconds). She returned to track the same evening and won the finals with a jaw-dropping wind-aided (+2.5m/s) time of 12.06 seconds. Her winning time will not count as another world record. However, it is the fastest in history under any weather condition.
“The goal was to come out and to win this gold. I just did it. Honestly, I believe in my abilities, but I was not expecting a world record at these championships,” Amusan said.
In a tight battle for the silver medal, Jamaica’s Britany Anderson clocked 12.23 seconds, beating Olympic champion Jasmine Camacho-Quinn by a mere 0.005 seconds.
The former 100m hurdles world record holder, Kendra Harrison was disqualified after she knocked down a hurdle with her hands, which is not allowed in this event.
