A 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck near Egypt’s city of Suez early Monday, shaking buildings across Cairo and prompting authorities to activate emergency response plans.
The National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics said the quake occurred around 3:00 a.m. local time, with its epicentre about 40 kilometres north of Suez. Tremors were felt across several parts of the country, including El-Arish near the Gaza border.
Health Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar ordered emergency services and ambulance units to remain on high alert, while the Egyptian Red Crescent advised residents to avoid old and structurally weak buildings.
Authorities said there were no immediate reports of deaths, injuries or major damage but continued to monitor the situation. Egypt rarely experiences strong earthquakes, although a 5.8-magnitude quake near Cairo in 1992 killed more than 500 people.
