Former Cuban President and leader of the Communist revolution, Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz has died at the age of 90. The iconic leader more commonly called Fidel Castro died at 22:29 hours on Friday evening according to the Cuban President, Raul Castro.
Fidel ruled the Cuban people for almost 50 years under a one-party state until his brother Raul took over in 2008.
Castro played a key role in the Cuban Revolution by leading the “26th of July Movement” with his brother Raul and Che Guevara in a guerilla warfare against the incumbent government in 1959. The icon was a friend of the Soviets and an archenemy of the United States during the Cold War.
He was decorated with different international awards and he was greatly hailed as a champion of humanitarism and anti-imperialism.
