President Bola Tinubu has appointed Major General Olufemi Oluyede as the Acting Chief of Army Staff. The announcement was made on Wednesday evening by Mr. Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, who stated that Oluyede would serve as acting chief during the absence of the substantive Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja.
The official statement, titled “President Tinubu Appoints Major General Olufemi Olatubosun Oluyede as Acting Chief of Army Staff,” highlighted Oluyede’s distinguished career and his recent role as the 56th Commander of the Infantry Corps of the Nigerian Army, based in Jaji, Kaduna.
With a career spanning over three decades, the 56-year-old Major General Oluyede was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1992 and achieved the rank of Major General in September 2020. Notably, he and Lt. Gen. Lagbaja were coursemates in the 39th Regular Course.
Over the years, Oluyede has held numerous command roles, beginning as a Platoon Commander and adjutant at 65 Battalion, rising to Company Commander of 177 Guards Battalion, and later becoming the Staff Officer of the Guards Brigade. His expertise extends to specialized training, having served as the Commandant of the Amphibious Training School.
A seasoned field officer, Major General Oluyede has participated in various operations, including the Economic Community of West African States Monitoring Group Mission in Liberia, Operation HARMONY IV in Bakassi, and the ongoing Operation HADIN KAI in northeastern Nigeria, where he led the 27 Task Force Brigade.
Onanuga emphasized Oluyede’s numerous honors, acknowledging his contributions to national security. These honors include the Corps Medal of Honour, Grand Service Star, and the Field Command Medal. His exemplary service has also earned him the Chief of Army Staff Commendation Award.
Major General Oluyede is married with three children, balancing a family life with his extensive military commitment.
