In a major step toward improving community welfare, Onne Multipurpose Terminal (OMT) has commissioned a new solar-powered water supply project in Ogu, its host community in the Ogu/Bolo Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The project consists of four solar-powered water systems, each with a 4,000-litre capacity, and forms part of OMT’s ongoing Safe Water Scheme, which was launched in 2023 to enhance access to clean and safe water in underserved communities.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, OMT Managing Director Mr. Nicolo Scannavini reaffirmed the company’s commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and the sustainable development of its host communities.

“Today, we are proud to commission another phase of our Safe Water Scheme — four solar-powered water supply systems strategically located across the community,” Scannavini said. “This follows the initial installation of three similar systems in 2023. These initiatives are designed to combat water scarcity and promote a culture of safe, clean water in Ogu.”

Scannavini also acknowledged that two of the previous systems are currently undergoing refurbishment and assured the community of their prompt restoration. He highlighted the positive relationship between OMT and Ogu, noting that the community has contributed significantly to the company’s workforce, including one of its top cargo-handling managers.

Chief Lawrence Inuma, Secretary of the Ogu Divisional Council of Chiefs, expressed deep appreciation for OMT’s continued social interventions.

“This water project will significantly reduce the burden of water scarcity. We urge OMT to sustain this positive momentum, especially in youth employment and empowerment. A gainfully employed youth population is crucial to reducing crime and promoting sustainable development,” Chief Inuma stated.

Also speaking at the event, Ogu Community Liaison Officer and former youth leader Steve Davids described the project as transformative.

“These solar-powered systems are a game-changer,” Davids said. “They ensure steady water supply regardless of electricity availability, and we are optimistic that more developmental projects will follow.”

OMT, a key logistics and cargo handling company operating from the Onne Port Complex, plays a vital role in maritime trade and logistics in West Africa. Beyond its commercial operations, the company is widely recognized for its CSR focus on community development, environmental sustainability, and youth empowerment.

The latest water project further underscores OMT’s role as a socially responsible corporate player committed to driving inclusive growth and improving living conditions in its areas of operation.
