The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 65-year-old man, Chibuike Azubike, for allegedly parading himself as the “Obi of Lagos” and attempting to stage an unlawful unveiling ceremony.
Azubike, said to be from the Obodoukwu Ancient Kingdom in Ideato North Local Government Area of Imo State, was arrested alongside three alleged accomplices: Chief Chibuzor Ani (57), Chief Martins Nwaodika (65), and Ikechukwu Franklin Nnadi (41). All four suspects are currently in custody at the command headquarters in Ikeja.
Police spokespersons confirmed on Wednesday that the group had planned to unveil a prototype of a purported N1.5 billion “Palace of Obi of Lagos State” at Apple Hall in Amuwo Odofin on Saturday, September 13, 2025. The venue was sealed off by security operatives to prevent public disorder and protect citizens from being deceived.
Commissioner of Police Olohundare Jimoh said tactical units, including the Eko Strike Force, were deployed to maintain peace and order during the attempted ceremony. He noted that investigations were ongoing and that the suspects would be charged in court upon conclusion.
Jimoh further warned Lagos residents to remain alert against impostors exploiting cultural and traditional institutions. “Such acts are illegal and capable of disturbing public peace,” he said.
