President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a 100-kilometre stretch of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway to pass through Edo State, expanding the project’s alignment to include the state for the first time.
The Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, announced the approval during the Edo State Independence Gala Night in Benin City on October 1, 2025.
Umahi said the adjustment was made at the president’s directive to ensure the 700-kilometre highway passes through Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River States.
“The coastal road was first dreamt by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu 47 years back, but sadly, Edo State was not included in the alignment. Today, the President has given Edo 100 kilometres of the highway,” Umahi said.
He also commended Governor Monday Okpebholo for committing to repair critical portions of the Benin-Sapele-Warri highway, which he described as “deathtraps to motorists.”
In his remarks, Governor Okpebholo expressed gratitude to the president for extending the project to Edo, calling it “a manifestation of the extraordinary love of the President to the people of Edo State.”
He also underscored the urgency of fixing deteriorated roads in the state, particularly the Benin–Sapele–Warri axis.
“Our people are crying out for this road to be fixed. If I do my part and you do your part, no one will criticize our president,” the governor said.
