Manchester United have sacked head coach Ruben Amorim, the club confirmed on Monday, January 5, 2026, bringing an abrupt end to the Portuguese manager’s short spell at Old Trafford.
In a statement, the club said Amorim had been relieved of his duties amid growing dissatisfaction with the team’s performances and concerns over comments he made publicly that exposed internal tensions within the club.
Amorim, who was appointed in November 2024, leaves with United sitting sixth in the Premier League. His dismissal came less than 24 hours after a post-match press conference following a 1–1 draw with Leeds United, during which he openly criticised the club’s hierarchy and questioned the limits of his authority.
Sources close to the club said United’s leadership moved swiftly after the interview, viewing the remarks as damaging at a sensitive time for the club. The comments reportedly intensified pressure on Amorim, whose tenure lasted just over a year.
The club has not yet announced an interim replacement or provided details on the process to appoint a new head coach.
