The Federal Government has intensified efforts to close Nigeria’s metering gap under the Distribution Sector Recovery Programme (DISREP), with thousands of prepaid meters now available for free distribution nationwide.

The programme is being implemented by the Bureau of Public Enterprises in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Power and the Transmission Company of Nigeria, with support from the World Bank.

Officials say the initiative is aimed at ensuring that households and businesses across the country are properly metered, thereby eliminating the long-standing issue of estimated billing in the power sector.

Electricity distribution companies in major cities—including Abuja, Benin, Eko, Enugu, Ibadan, Ikeja, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, Port Harcourt, and Yola—have already received significant allocations of meters for distribution to customers.

Authorities urged Nigerians to take advantage of the programme by visiting their nearest electricity distribution company offices to request installation.

They also warned that the meters and their installation are completely free under DISREP, cautioning the public against making any payments or falling victim to fraud.

The government said the rollout is part of broader reforms to improve efficiency, transparency, and consumer confidence in Nigeria’s electricity distribution system.
