President Bola Tinubu will address a joint session of the National Assembly on June 12 as part of activities marking the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.
The announcement was made following the inauguration of an Inter-Ministerial Committee tasked with coordinating the nationwide programme for the annual event.
Other activities scheduled for the celebration include a World Press Conference on June 4, special Juma’at prayers on June 5, an inter-denominational church service on June 7, a Democracy Day public lecture on June 9, youth and women-focused programmes on June 10, a presidential broadcast on June 12, and a gala night.
Inaugurating the committee, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, paid tribute to the late Chief MKO Abiola and other pro-democracy activists whose sacrifices paved the way for democratic governance in Nigeria.
Akume said the celebration would provide an opportunity to reflect on Nigeria’s democratic journey, honour its heroes, and showcase the achievements of the Tinubu administration in strengthening democratic institutions and implementing reforms.
He directed committee members to commence work immediately to ensure a successful commemoration, describing the event as “modest but purposeful” in line with the government’s commitment to fiscal responsibility.
Nigeria observes Democracy Day every June 12 in honour of the 1993 presidential election widely believed to have been won by the late MKO Abiola and to celebrate the country’s democratic progress.
