United States President Donald Trump has commended President Bola Tinubu for what he described as his decisive leadership in tackling terrorism and insecurity in Nigeria, particularly the violence affecting Christian communities.

In a letter dated July 6, 2026, Trump praised Tinubu’s commitment to addressing the country’s security challenges, saying it was “a true honour” to stand with Nigeria in the fight against terrorism.

He described the US-Nigeria relationship as crucial at a time of growing insecurity across West Africa and said both countries shared a common goal of confronting terrorism. Trump also highlighted the US-Nigeria 2026 Defence Cooperation Roadmap, which he said provides a strong framework for enhanced security collaboration.

The US President noted that Washington had deployed Special Operations Forces to train and equip the Nigerian Armed Forces with the skills, intelligence and resources needed to combat terrorism and protect citizens.

Nigeria and the United States have strengthened security cooperation in recent months through a Joint Working Group established by both presidents. The partnership has focused on intelligence sharing, training and joint operations, including the May 16 operation that eliminated ISIS commander Abubakar Al-Minoki and several of his lieutenants in the Lake Chad region.

The letter was made public on Tuesday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
