The Presidency has criticised former Vice President Atiku Abubakar over his position on petrol subsidy, accusing him of making three conflicting statements on the issue within a week.
In a statement, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said comments by Atiku and his aides had created confusion over whether a future Atiku administration would restore, temporarily retain or phase out fuel subsidy.
Onanuga urged Atiku to clearly explain his proposed “targeted subsidy,” including its cost, beneficiaries, funding source and conditions for its eventual termination.
The Presidency also argued that petrol prices were only one of several factors driving inflation and questioned how Atiku’s proposed subsidy policy would affect other petroleum products derived from crude oil.
The statement accused the former vice president of playing politics with economic policy and urged him to present Nigerians with a clear and costed petroleum policy.
