The Kano State House of Assembly has suspended its earlier decision to investigate the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II for alleged financial misappropriation.
This was disclosed by the Speaker of the state’s assembly, Kabiru Alhassan Rurum during Monday’s plenary session of the assembly.
Rurum said the decision to halt the probe came after the Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje wrote the assembly following the intervention of well-meaning individuals and groups on the issue. The individuals are said to include former military president, Ibrahim Babangida, former Head of State, Abdulsalami Abubakar and the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’adu Abubakar.
Governor Ganduje in the letter said: “Therefore, I am appealing to the honourable members to kindly end the investigation for the progress of the state.”
Rurum further explained that the lawmakers unanimously resolved to indefinitely suspend the probe and review the law establishing the emirate after exhaustive deliberations that lasted several hours.
The Kano State House of Assembly had about two weeks ago constituted an eight-member committee to look into the allegations leveled against the Emir which included alleged misappropriation of about N4 billion and making false accusations against the State Governor.
