Former Nigerian President, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has claimed that a majority of Nigerians still believe in the programmes and capabilities of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Jonathan, who stated this on Monday at the expanded national caucus meeting of the party in Abuja said despite all the travails experienced by the PDP in the last 14 months, Nigerians still trust the nation’s largest opposition party.
“Nigerians still believe in PDP. When the Supreme Court judgment was given, I was very surprised. Some of the people who called me, sent text messages to me, were not even politicians but they were so happy. I must commend the Ahmed Makarfi-led Caretaker Committee, the governors, former ministers, men and women and our youth who stood by the party throughout this crisis,” Jonathan said.
“Our party has come of age, this is the first major meeting and I believe the key decisions will be taken tonight,” he added.
He said that although he attended the meeting to appreciate all the party members for staying loyal and steadfast throughout the leadership tussle, he believed that once the party was strengthened, all aggrieved persons and defected members would have no option but to step back into the PDP fold.
