Gunmen disguised as worshippers on Friday infiltrated St. Thomas’ Catholic Church, Onilekere, Ikeja, Lagos State and shot the Parish Priest, Reverend Daniel Nwankwo at close range.
The gunmen reportedly approached the priest and demanded audience with him at around 8:30 a.m. shortly after he had concluded the day’s morning mass.
The priest granted their request without suspicion but as soon as he followed them outside the church auditorium, one of the attackers opened fire on him with a locally made pistol before they scaled the fence and escaped through a nearby canal.
The Lagos State Commisioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi who led a crack team of policemen to the scene assured worshippers that the culprits would be apprehended and made to face the full wrath of the law.
Olamide Famous-Cole, the State Police Command spokesman however dispelled rumours that the priest was killed during the attack, saying he was immediately rushed to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) where he is currently recuperating.
