The Federal High Court in Lagos on Monday awarded N2 million against the Nigeria Police in the fundamental rights enforcement suit filed by Mr. Okechukwu Obiechina who is alleged to be the brother-in-law of suspected billionaire kidnapper, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike alias Evans.

Delivering the judgment, Justice Mohammed Idris of the Federal High Court declared that Obiechina’s arrest and consequent detention by the police was unconstitutional and held that the remand order which the police claimed to have obtained from a magistrate court was invalid.

Apart from the N2 million awarded in Obiechina’s favour for damages, the court also ordered the police to immediately release him unconditionally or charge him to court if they have established any case against him.

Justice Idris further ordered the police authorities to tender a public apology to Mr. Obiechina, the contents of which must be published in two national daily newspapers.
