A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Tuesday reversed its May 30 order which froze 16 bank accounts belonging to the wife of former President, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.
Justice Binta Nyako of the High Court withdraw the order following the failure of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to conduct and complete its investigations within 90 days into the alleged infractions involving the accounts.
The court’s decision followed an application by the counsel to Mrs. Jonathan, Mike Ozekhome (SAN) which asked the court to set aside an ex-parte motion filed by the anti-graft agency for continued control of the affected accounts.
Ozekhome, while describing the EFCC’s failure to carry out the investigations as an abuse of the court order said: “The Judge, Justice Binta, had given the EFCC 90 days within which to investigate and prosecute parties involved in the allegations but they never did that,” Ozekhome told reporters after the ruling.
He added: “So we asked the court to set aside the interim forfeiture order. The judge set aside the order granted on May 30.”
