The Super Eagles of Nigeria survived a late onslaught from the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon in Yaounde on Monday to secure a well-deserved 1 – 1 draw and move a step closer to qualifying for the 2018 World Cup to be hosted by Russia.
Moses Simon had put the Eagles ahead in 30 minutes but Cameroon’s second half substitute, FC Porto’s Vincent Aboubacar equalized from a 75th-minute penalty after Nigeria’s goalkeeper, Ikechukwu Ezenwa fouled Arnaud Djoum in the eighteen yard box.
Unbeaten Nigeria remains top of Group B with 10 points from four matches while their closest rival, Zambia who will be guests to the Desert Foxes of Algeria on Tuesday night are second with four points.
Dropping two points at home to the Super Eagles automatically eliminated the Indomitable Lions from qualifying for their eighth World Cup as they have only been able to garner three points from four matches.
The Eagles will qualify for the Mundial with an away victory over Algeria or a home win over the Chipolopolos of Zambia whom they host on October 7.
