The British Government has indicted Nigeria for the continued operation of Radio Biafra which the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) uses as a medium to spread their campaign for an independent state of Biafra.

The radio station which is located in the UK was established by the Movement for the actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) with the leader of IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, as its Director.

Kanu, who is also a British citizen operated the station on behalf of MASSOB but later took it over and transformed it into IPOB’s megaphone.

In a terse statement released on Thursday by Mr. Joe Abuku, the Press and Public Affairs Officer, British High Commission in Nigeria, the UK said it was unaware of any representation from the Nigerian government about the closure of Radio Biafra.

“The UK is not aware of any representation from the Nigerian government about Radio Biafra. Were we to receive any such request, we would, of course, consider it carefully on the basis of the available evidence, recognizing that freedom of speech and expression carries responsibilities,” the statement read.

Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed had earlier this week insinuated that the refusal of the UK government to shut down the radio station was detrimental to the ongoing campaign against hate speeches and fake news in Nigeria.
