An Iranian general who replaced the leader killed by a US airstrike in Baghdad has vowed to take revenge as Tehran abandoned the remaining limits of its 2015 nuclear deal with world powers in response to the slaying.

Esmail Ghaani’s threat comes as the blowback over the US killing of top Iranian general Qassim Soleimani. This is even as Iraq’s parliament has called for the expulsion of all American troops from Iraqi soil.

Ghaani who made the remarks in an interview with Iranian state television aired Monday said: “God the Almighty has promised to get his revenge, and God is the main avenger. Certainly actions will be taken.”

Soleimani’s daughter, Zeinab has also directly threatened an attack on the US military in the Middle East.

Speaking to a crowd of hundreds of thousands of sympathizers in Tehran, Zeinab said amid cheers: “The families of US soldiers in the Middle East will spend their days waiting for death of their children.”

These developments could bring Iran closer to building an atomic bomb, set off a proxy or military attack launched by Tehran against America as well as enable the Islamic State regroup to stage a comeback in Iraq.

Adding to the tensions, US President, Donald Trump has threatened to demand billions of dollars in compensation from Iraq or impose ‘sanctions like they’ve never seen before” if it goes through with expelling US troops.
