Seven persons have been confirmed killed and scores injured after an explosion rocked Abule Ado in Amuwo Odofin Local Council Development Area of Lagos.

Scores of houses were brought down by the massive explosion which was heard in many parts of Lagos. A Catholic school named Bethlehem High School was almost completely brought down. Many boarding students were injured while a few of them are feared dead.

The Principal of the school, Rev. Sr. Henrietta Alokha died while evacuating students from one of the buildings. Eye witnesses sayshe had successfully rescued many of the students when the roof came down on her.

Many churches, factories and shopping complexes were destroyed by the explosion. Scores of people lost their cars to the explosion.

Relevant government agencies are still working to come up with a categorical report on the cause of the disaster but the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation has said the tragedy was caused by a petrol tanker which crashed onto a gas filling facility. The resultant explosion from that crash, according to the corporation, terribly impacted a section of the NNPC pipeline which runs through the area triggering further explosion and massive fire.

The police have deployed 50 officers to ensure residents are safe until the fire is completely put out.

President Muhammadu Buhari this evening tweeted his commiseration with the victims of the explosion. He also said the NNPC was making efforts to determine the cause of the incident.
