Despite the disbandment of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) by the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, protests continued yesterday in several Nigerian cities including Abuja, Onitsha, and Jos as youths demand comprehensive reforms of policing in the country.
The street demonstrators stormed the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters in Abuja, the embassies of the United States and the United Kingdom as well as the European Union Press Centre in Maitama District of the Federal Capital.
Popular music crooner, Davido, also met with the Inspector General of Police to present the protesters demands.
Economic activities in the nation’s commercial capital, Lagos, were halted as protesters in clusters, moved around the state and blocked off major roads for many hours.
The entry point to Lagos from Ibadan was held up by the protesters in the afternoon.
The Lekki tollgate and the road leading to the Murtala Muhammed International Airport were also shut down. Protesters also demonstrated in front of the University of Lagos.
Also in Lagos, some protesters alleged that policemen had killed some of the demonstrators. However, the Police Force has denied the accusations.
