Liz Truss has announced her resignation as prime minister after just 44 days in Downing Street.
“I recognise given the situation I cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative party. I’ve spoken to his majesty the King to notify him I’m resigning as leader of the Conservative party,” she said.
There will be Conservative leadership election to be completed within the next week.
Her resignation comes after she met the chairman of the 1922 Committee of backbench MPs as more Tories called for her to quit.
Truss has only been in office for 44 days. The previous record-holder for shortest-serving prime minister was George Canning, who lasted 119 days. He started on April 12, 1827 and died on Aug. 8, 1827.
