The Federal High Court in Lagos has sentenced the controversial cross-dresser, Idris Olanrewaju Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, to six months imprisonment without the option of a fine. The verdict, delivered by Justice Abimbola Awogboro, underscores the seriousness with which the court views the abuse and mutilation of the Nigerian currency – naira.

Addressing the courtroom, Justice Awogboro emphasized that the judgment serves as a stern warning to individuals who engage in similar acts of currency abuse, highlighting the need for deterrence and respect for the nation’s legal tender. Before pronouncing the sentence, the judge sought clarification from Bobrisky about his gender identity, to which he promptly affirmed his status as a man.

Bobrisky will serve his jail term at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre, with the commencement of his sentence slated for March 24, 2024, the day of his arrest. The sentencing follows Bobrisky’s conviction on April 5, after pleading guilty to four counts of naira abuse brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The charges against Bobrisky detailed instances where he tampered with various sums of Nigerian currency during social events, including spraying cash totaling N400,000 at Imax Circle Mall in Jakande, Lekki. Similar incidents occurred at locations such as Aja Junction in Ikorodu, White Steve Event Hall in Ikeja, and an event hall in Oniru, Victoria Island, resulting in charges under the Central Bank Act, 2007.

The sentencing was initially scheduled for last Thursday; however, it was postponed due to the Federal Government declaring the day a public holiday for the Eid-El-Fitri celebration.
