The Federal Ministry of Education has refuted claims that it plans to abolish the Junior Secondary School (JSS) and Senior Secondary School (SSS) classifications.
In a statement released on Friday, February 7, 2025, the ministry clarified that the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, proposed introducing a 12-year basic education system, which would retain the existing 6-3-3 structure. This proposal aims to remove the examination barrier between JSS and SSS, allowing students to progress seamlessly without external assessments at that stage.
The ministry emphasized that this is merely a proposal subject to extensive stakeholder consultations over the next eight months, with a final decision to be made at the National Council on Education meeting in October 2025. The public is advised to disregard any false claims regarding the scrapping of JSS and SSS.
