Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed support for a U.S.-proposed 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine but emphasized that the terms must be carefully negotiated to ensure lasting peace. Speaking at a news conference in Moscow on Thursday, Putin underscored the need for clear mechanisms to enforce the truce and prevent potential violations.

“The idea itself is correct, and we certainly support it,” Putin stated. “But there are issues that we need to discuss, and I think that we need to discuss it with our American colleagues and partners.”

He raised concerns over whether Ukraine might use the ceasefire period to regroup, mobilize forces, and rearm. “We agree with the proposals to halt the fighting, but we proceed from the assumption that the ceasefire should lead to lasting peace and remove the root causes of the crisis,” he added.

Putin suggested that Ukraine’s acceptance of the ceasefire might be influenced by its battlefield position. He claimed that Ukrainian troops engaged in an incursion into Russia’s Kursk region would soon be fully surrounded.

“In these conditions, I believe it would be good for the Ukrainian side to secure a ceasefire for at least 30 days,” he noted, questioning whether Ukrainian forces in Kursk would be allowed to withdraw peacefully.

The Russian president thanked U.S. President Donald Trump for his involvement in peace efforts, as well as the leaders of China, India, Brazil, and South Africa for their diplomatic efforts to end hostilities and minimize casualties.

Moscow, however, made it clear that it would not accept any NATO member states as peacekeepers to monitor a potential ceasefire.
