Chelsea clinched their first UEFA Conference League title in spectacular fashion with a 4-1 win over Real Betis in the final, completing a clean sweep of all five major UEFA club competitions. The historic victory was sealed at Wrocław Stadium in Poland, where the Blues overturned a first-half deficit with a commanding second-half display.
Real Betis took the lead early through Abde Ezzalzouli in the ninth minute, punishing a sluggish Chelsea start. Despite dominating possession throughout the first half, Chelsea were unable to find a breakthrough before the interval.
However, a tactical shift at halftime changed the course of the match. Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca introduced club captain Reece James, replacing Malo Gusto, a move that instantly energized the team.
Chelsea’s equalizer came in the 65th minute when Enzo Fernández headed home a precise cross from Cole Palmer. Just five minutes later, Nicolas Jackson put the Blues ahead, again assisted by Palmer, who was instrumental in the turnaround. Jadon Sancho extended the lead in the 83rd minute, calmly slotting home after a defensive lapse by Betis. Moisés Caicedo capped the comeback with a deflected shot in stoppage time to seal a 4-1 victory.
Speaking after the match, Maresca praised his squad for their focus and maturity. “The players showed how serious and professional they are. It’s easy to underestimate your opponents in a competition like this, but we remained committed and got the reward,” he said.
The win ends a long drought for English clubs in European finals against Spanish sides, and solidifies Chelsea’s place in history as the only club to have won the Champions League, Europa League, Cup Winners’ Cup, UEFA Super Cup, and now the Conference League.
Celebrations continued late into the night, with players including Caicedo taking part in karaoke sessions and Mykhailo Mudryk posing with the winner’s medal, despite being sidelined since November.
Despite the significance of the win, Chelsea will not hold a trophy parade due to scheduling conflicts, including players’ international duties and the Club World Cup, where they are set to face Club León on June 16.
This triumph marks a promising start to Maresca’s tenure and offers renewed optimism for Chelsea’s future under his leadership.
