The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast widespread thunderstorms and rainfall across the country between Monday, May 27, and Wednesday, May 29, 2025. The weather outlook, released in Abuja on Sunday, highlights significant weather activity particularly in the northern, central, and southern regions of Nigeria.

Monday Outlook

NiMet predicts morning thunderstorms and rains in parts of Taraba, Kaduna, Gombe, Bauchi, Kebbi, Sokoto, Katsina, Jigawa, and Kano states. Later in the day, similar weather conditions are expected to persist over Taraba, Kaduna, Sokoto, Borno, Kebbi, and Zamfara.

In the southern and coastal regions, rain showers are anticipated over Oyo, Ekiti, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Lagos, Edo, Abia, Imo, Ebonyi, Enugu, Anambra, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Rivers, Delta, and Bayelsa states.

Tuesday Forecast

Thunderstorms with rainfall are expected in the morning across northern states including Kano, Zamfara, Katsina, Bauchi, Gombe, Adamawa, Borno, Yobe, and Taraba. Afternoon and evening rains will continue in Taraba, Kebbi, Borno, Gombe, Adamawa, Kaduna, Bauchi, and Katsina.

In the North-Central zone, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Niger, and Nasarawa are likely to see morning rains, with continued thunderstorms forecast for FCT, Nasarawa, Kogi, Niger, Kwara, and Plateau later in the day.

In the South, Ondo, Ogun, Edo, Ebonyi, Abia, Cross River, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom may experience morning thunderstorms, while evening rains are expected in Oyo, Ekiti, Osun, Ogun, Lagos, Edo, Anambra, Abia, Enugu, Imo, Ebonyi, Cross River, Rivers, Delta, and Bayelsa.

Wednesday Outlook

Thunderstorms and rains are predicted in the northern parts including Zamfara, Adamawa, Kaduna, Sokoto, Kebbi, and Taraba during the morning hours. The weather will persist into the afternoon and evening in Taraba, Kaduna, Katsina, Bauchi, Zamfara, Sokoto, and Adamawa.

The North-Central states of FCT, Nasarawa, Niger, and Benue will see morning thunderstorms, with additional rainfall later in Nasarawa, Plateau, FCT, Kwara, Kogi, and Niger.

In the South, morning rains are forecast for Ogun, Ondo, Oyo, Edo, Enugu, Ebonyi, Cross River, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom.

Advisory and Safety Measures

NiMet has warned that strong winds may precede thunderstorms, urging residents to secure loose objects to avoid damage or injury. The agency also advised the public to:

  • Avoid driving during heavy rainfall
  • Disconnect electrical appliances during storms
  • Stay clear of tall trees that could shed branches

Airline operators are also encouraged to obtain airport-specific weather reports for flight planning and operational safety.
