A former Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly and Chairman, Media Publicity and Image Making of President Muhammadu Buhari’s campaign groups in the state, Engr. Ignatius Edet has decamped from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Edet disclosed this at the Uyo Township Stadium during the flag-off of Governor Udom Emmanuel’s re-election campaign.
Speaking at the event, Edet expressed joy for rejoining the PDP, a party he described as being sensitive to the wishes and aspirations of its members, claiming that he left the APC due to the high handedness of some of its chieftains.
He pointed out that the said chieftains, including a senior aide to President Buhari, allegedly hand-picked candidates of the party in the last primaries.
Edet further expressed disappointment at the manner the APC was being run in the state, adding that he was confident that the PDP, which had been on ground in the state with sustainable structures would sweep the polls.
His words: “I’m happy to come back home. The things that made me to leave PDP are no more there. When I was in APC, some people tried to play God. They imposed candidates on us.
Senator Ita Enang thinks he’s God. He tries to impose things on our people but he has forgotten that there is only one God. I have the privilege of bringing over 5000 supporters of mine to support Udom Emmanuel in 2019.”
Receiving the decampees, the State Chairman of the PDP, Mr. Paul Ekpo expressed pride and happiness in what he described as a homecoming by the former Speaker and others.
He promised them that the umbrella was large enough to accommodate everybody and added that the ex-Speaker and other defectors would be accorded their pride of place in the party.
