Phillip Manshaus, a man accused of an attempted terrorist attack on a mosque in the Norwegian capital, Oslo has appeared in court covered in bruises and smiling.
Manshaus, who is also suspected of killing his teenage stepsister did not speak during the hearing, with his defence lawyer, Unni Fries saying he ‘will use his right not to explain himself for now’. Fries added that Manshaus has declared himself not guilty to claims that he carried out the assault.
The 21-year-old Manshaus had dark bruises around his eyes as well as several scratches on his face and neck.
The Norwegian Police said he was arrested on Saturday after entering a mosque in the suburb of Baerum where three men were preparing for Sunday’s Eid al-Adha celebrations.
According to authorities, Manshaus was waving weapons about and several shots were fired but they did not confirm what types of weapon was used. On Sunday, Police confirmed they were treating the attack as a terrorist incident.
The only injury during the incident was to the eye of a 75-year-old man, Mohammad Rafiq after he overpowered the gunman to the ground and held him down until the police arrived.
After the attack, Police raided Manshaus’ house which was located nearby and discovered the body of his 17-year-old stepsister. He is also suspected of killing her.
