An NGO, the Entrepreneurship and Advocacy (LEAD) Network Africa, says electronic transmission of results will enhance credibility and popular participation in the electoral process.
The Senate had on Tuesday rescinded its earlier decision against electronic transmission of election results by INEC.
The Executive Director of LEAD Network Africa, Mr Chukwuma Okenwa, on Thursday told newsmen in Enugu that the move was quite commendable.
Okenwa said that the deployment of technology via electronic transmission of results and more technological innovations in the near future would open up the entire electoral process/system.
According to Okenwa, LEAD Network Africa is excited with the move and it is in the right direction in order to give our electoral process/system a futuristic focus.
“LEAD Network Africa is optimistic that it will increase the credibility, transparency and popular participation of more Nigerians in the electoral process.
“There would be more believability created by the electronic transmission of results; thus, the issue of manipulation will be checked.
“This move will also encourage popular candidates to vie for elective positions,” he said.
The LEAD Network Africa boss also appreciated the Senate for the decision and aligning itself to technology, innovation and future growth of the entire electoral process/system in the country.
“I laud the Senate for looking beyond today. They have looked into the future and have decided to support the future growth of the electoral process or system,” he said.
Okenwa said that the latest move would assist the 2023 General Election to be more people-driven.
“I believe that when applied appropriately; we might likely see the repeat of the 1993 Option-A4 General Election in 2023, which then got massive participation, credibility and recognition both locally and internationally,” he added.
