The Alaafin of Oyo, one of Nigeria’s most prominent traditional rulers, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, has died at the age of 83.
Alaafin Adeyemi, the third from the Alowolodu Ruling House in the ancient kingdom of Oyo, died in the late hours of Friday at Afe Babalola University Teaching Hospital, Ado Ekiti in Ekiti State.
He was the longest reigning Alaafin ever, having ruled for more than 52 years. His remains were laid to rest on Saturday within the premises of his palace.
The Alaafin throne is one of the most enduring kingships in Africa. It is the nucleus of power and leadership of what used to be the Great Oyo Empire.
