Aviation workers in Lagos have called off their strike which paralyzed airline services at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport for the greater part of today.

The strike which was carried out by workers of the Nigerian Aviation Handling Company Plc (NAHCO) was at the instance of the National Union of Air Transport Employees, NUATE and the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, ATSSSAN.

In their notice of strike, the unions had claimed that the management of NAHCO had refused to yield to their demand for a review of the salaries of their workers. They also claimed that the negotiations had been going on since June 2022 and that NAHCO had refused to accede to their demands. NAHCO, according to the unions, also refused to respond to several to several ultimatums issued by them.

The suspension of the strike came as a result of what looks like a  headway in the negotiations. Frances Akinjole, Deputy General Secretary of the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, who spoke with Punch corresspondent said:” It’s been suspended and they’ve agreed to commence negotiation on the salary issue with us.”
