The Nigerian government has warned that heavy rainfall and rising river levels could cause flooding in 48 towns across 13 states between September 13-17.

In a flood prediction report issued Wednesday, the Federal Ministry of Environment identified at-risk communities in Kano, Kebbi, Katsina, Niger, Kwara, Zamfara, Bauchi, Taraba, Borno, Adamawa, Yobe, Jigawa and Gombe states.

The alert stated that swelling of the Benue and Niger Rivers threatens flooding in downstream areas up through Bayelsa State. Residents were advised to take precautions.

Specific towns flagged include Kano, Argungu, Jibia, Kontagora, Kaura Namoda, Azare, Donga, Dikwa, Numan, Dutse and others. The government requested feedback from local officials to aid disaster mitigation.

Earlier this week, the Minister of Water Resources Joseph Utsev said efforts were underway to manage floods caused by heavy rains and reservoir water releases. But he urged citizens to heed flood warnings.

Authorities hope early alerts this rainy season can help vulnerable communities better prepare and prevent a similar tragedy. But flooding remains a substantial risk in the coming weeks.
