The House of Representatives is stepping in to address the ongoing strikes by labour unions across the country. Speaker Tajudeen Abbas announced the National Assembly leadership will immediately intervene in the dispute.
The decision came after Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu urged urgent action through a motion of national importance. Lawmakers were divided on the debate, with some questioning the rationale behind the strikes despite court injunctions. Others appealed for the House to remain neutral in resolving the matter.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) commenced nationwide strikes on Tuesday following alleged assaults on NLC President Joe Ajaero in Owerri, Imo State. Ajaero was leading a protest against labor policies by the state government on November 1 when the reported incident occurred.
While lawmakers hold conflicting views, Speaker Abbas asserted the House leadership will take swift action to resolve the labour disputes. Their intervention aims to address union concerns while minimizing further work disruptions and economic impacts.
