As the political landscape in Ondo State gears up for the forthcoming Governorship Election slated for November 16, 2024, Senator Jimoh Ibrahim has taken a significant step by withdrawing his case against the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State.
In a notice of withdrawal filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja under suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/588/2024, Senator Ibrahim stated his decision to “discontinue the suit against all the defendants in the interest of all concerned.”
Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, who represents Ondo South in the Senate, was one of the aspirants in the April 20 governorship primary of the APC in Ondo. He had accused the party of deviating from its guidelines during the conduct of the primary, labeling it as a “mega fraud”. Consequently, he filed a suit to annul the primary that saw Governor Aiyedatiwa emerge as the party’s flag bearer for the November poll.
The defendants in the suit included Governor Aiyedatiwa, the APC, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
However, in a statement issued on Tuesday, Senator Ibrahim disclosed that he withdrew the suit following the intervention of President Bola Tinubu and his assurances to enhance internal democracy within the APC.
While acknowledging the efforts made by Governor Aiyedatiwa to persuade him to retract the suit, Senator Ibrahim emphasized his respect for the President of Nigeria and his commitment to improving internal democracy within the APC. He described the withdrawal as his “cake gift” on the President’s first anniversary.
